A ROMANTIC EDUCATION - STEVE/TONY AU [CHAPTER 22]

Chapter 22
The lesson passed by relatively quickly, it was quiet and normal. At points the teacher had asked them to read out loud, which they all complied with, even Steve. It was another dull day where nothing much happened, though toward the end of the lesson the teacher had an announcement,
“Okay class, we have a new student joining us now.”
Great, another new student. Steve thought, rolling his eyes. The last thing he wanted was another person like Tony joining the school to annoy him.
“His name is Loki Laufeyson, please make him feel welcome.” The teacher continued to say as a tall boy with ebony hair walked in, it was slicked back. He was pale and had bright blue eyes that almost looked green in certain lights.
That guy is freaking tall… He’d be good on the basketball team… But he looks sort of skinny. Steve’s eyebrow arched as he analysed the boy, seeing that he was introverted by his posture and the fact he didn’t say anything, he just attempted to smile and sit down at the desk, not unpacking his things because they all knew that the bell was going to ring soon. He was the opposite of Tony, this was someone he could actually get along with, or at least have influence over without the worry of a power struggle.
Loki sat down the other side of Tony, glancing up at him then back down to a large book that he had in his hands. Steve got up from his desk, after all, class was practically done and they were all just waiting for the bell so that they could be excused from the room. He stood between Tony and Loki’s desks, holding out his hand,
“I’m Steve Rogers, basketball captain.” He said politely to Loki, who looked at him somewhat startled before speaking in a very posh manner, enunciating every word,
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mister Rogers. I’m Loki Laufeyson.” He replied with a small smile, shaking Steve’s hand.
“Hey, that book… Othello, that’s a pretty awesome book you got there.”
“You’re interested in English literature? I wouldn’t have thought that you would…”
“There’s a lot more to me than just basketball.” He said as he tilted his head, “What do you have next, maybe I can show you around.”
“I’ve got… P.E.”
“Damn.” Steve said as he snapped his fingers, “I’ve got science, I was hoping we’d be in the same class so I could be your partner instead. I’m having… Issues with mine.”
“That’s a shame; I hope it all resolves soon.”
“Yeah, a damn shame.” He sighed, “Anyway, the gyms pretty hard to miss, it was nice meeting you Laufeyson.” He said, walking back over to his desk just as the bell rang to collect his things.
“A pleasure.” Loki replied meekly in response, standing up and walking out of the class.
“You seemed so nice to him, Steve.” Peggy said as she watched him grab his things,
“Yeah well, people who are nice deserve to be treated just as nice.” He said, loud enough for Tony to hear.
Tony’s eyes narrowed as the new student. There was something about him that he didn’t like, he seemed kind of arrogant, prideful, and like he knew that he was better than everybody else. He watched as he sat next to him, and Tony immediately shivered, feeling that they wouldn’t get along. It was easy for Tony to be arrogant and a show off, this guy seemed to achieve that with a more discreet manner. He started packing his things as it was about time that the bell would go off. Suddenly, Steve was standing between him and Loki, his back turned to Tony, greeting him. Tony wanted to be out of there as soon as possible, but he had to wait for the bell, so he tried to push his chair closer to Pepper and ignore their conversation, though Steve didn’t try at all not being too loud.
“Are you jealous?” Pepper whispered to him.
“Of course not”, Tony hissed back. Yeah, he was feeling jealous. Steve would get along with the new guy, Loki didn’t argue with him in their first conversation ever. And who knows, he might even try to do something with Steve.
Steve’s words about Tony made him snap out of his thoughts. “Issues?” he said to Pepper, raising an eyebrow.
Loki walked outside the classroom as the bell went off, and Tony stood up and headed outside too, with Pepper following him. “You know what I have now? Science. Two hours sitting next to Rogers”, he said angrily, walking faster.
“Tony, calm down, everything will be fine”, Pepper tried to say.
Tony stopped and sighed, pushing his hair out of his face. The new guy seemed perfect, so neat and damn he was tall! Even taller than Steve, Tony wouldn’t want to stand next to him, he would feel so inferior. Yes, he had issues about his height even though he tried to hide it. He stood outside the science class and Pepper walked off to her other class. Like the other day, nobody bothered to show up that early, so Tony walked in and sat down, still feeling upset over the new student.
Steve walked into the class, his expression dropping as he sat on the joined tables so that he was right next to Tony, pulling out his textbook and reading it. The thought of being in science depressed him enough, but being next to Tony added an extra reason to be even more upset about having to attend this class, and having to pass it. He read the textbook as he waited for the other students to enter the class, highlighting segments and jotting down notes as he attempted to teach himself, but as usual nothing was sinking in. He was just doing everything he could to avoid making eye contact with Tony.
Tony looked at Steve walking in as they both ignored each other. He could keep going and ignoring him for the rest of the class, but at some point they would have to talk about the task. He tried to find something to talk about, but it was so hard.
“The new guy looks… stiffed”, he finally said, turning to look at Steve.
“Stiffed? By that do you mean poised and regal?” Steve said, not looking up once from his book as he spoke with his eyes still scanning the pages.
“So you liked him, right? Got a reputation with hitting on new students Rogers?” Tony muttered. It wasn’t exactly the kind of reaction he expected from Steve and him not bothering looking back at Tony pissed him off.
“Guess that whole ‘easy’ attitude of yours is rubbing off on me, besides; unlike you he’s a nice guy. He has manners and there wasn’t a huge show when he walked into school. He seems like a nice, quiet guy.” Steve said, turning the page of his textbook, seemingly un-phased.
“Please, Rogers, you’re easier than me. Watch out or next thing you know you’ll be the slut. Are you welcoming him the same way you welcomed me too? Or should I feel special?” Tony decided that the only way to get answers out of Steve was to piss him off and tease him. Steve’s hands held the book tighter, trying to prevent them from completely balling up into fists.
“You’d better shut your mouth, Stark. You’re the slut here; don’t try turning it on me.” He said as he spoke through gritted teeth.
“Call it whatever you want Rogers, you know I’m telling the truth”, Tony replied, feeling more confident as time passed by. He was glad we was starting to get Steve out of his head and going back to his normal self.
“Whatever helps you sleep at night, that’s hardly the truth when you know that it was you that made the first move?” Steve said, again through gritted teeth as his temper was starting to get the better of him.
“There’s nothing wrong with flirting. Last time I checked though, hitting on people and making out with others while you’re supposedly in a committed relationship is a slutty move”, Tony said looking deep into his eyes. He didn’t care if Steve was feeling uncomfortable, he would continue until he admitted defeat.
“I didn’t hit on you or flirt with you, you made the first move.” He replied, trying to focus on reading but everything made it so difficult. His jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed.
“Keep on blaming it on me, you could have just held back. And you didn’t.”, he said looking back at him. Steve was trying too hard to concentrate, but Tony was slowly getting him to an upset state.
“Stark… You’re testing my patience.” He mumbled, now shutting his eyes to reach that state of calm. He was resisting shouting or displaying any violence; it wasn’t like him to resort to such methods.
“Yes, I’m aware of that, that’s my goal”, Tony glared at him. He wasn’t sure how far Steve would go with this, but he was running out of things to say.
“You’re asking for me to smack you in the face, is that what you want?” His eyes opened, though very narrowly as he side-eyed the boy next to him.
“You won’t do that, you know in how much trouble that will get you”, Tony said defensively, shifting on his seat.
“I could care less, if you keep on going I’ll give you what you deserve…” He said, once more, he wasn’t used to threatening others, yet alone actually hitting them. But he could barely hold back anymore, Tony brought out something so primitive in him; his muscles were tense, his posture was slouched forward and his eyes seemed so cold and harsh which was completely different to his normal demeanour.
“So does my opinion matters that much to you Rogers? That’s so sweet of you, thinking of me like that”, Tony said with a smile, watching Steve’s change of posture and mechanically moving his chair a bit further away from him.
“It doesn’t matter, now shut up. I’m trying to study.” He said, his eyes darting back toward his book and scanning the pages again. Anything to get his mind to calm down, but looking at the book seemed to get him even more agitated, simply because he couldn’t understand any of it. The thought of failure made him angrier than ever.
Tony smiled to himself content, and took out his books too, opening them at where they were yesterday left. Steve was upset, his hands were trembling, and Tony felt a bit guilty taking pleasure from that. He shook his head and tried to get that thought away, as he continued looking at him from the corner of his eye.
Steve got up abruptly and practically threw his book down onto the desk, storming out of the class that others were walking into. He could care less that the crowds lined the hallways as everyone was trying to find their way into their designated rooms, he walked to his locker as quickly as he could and punched it so hard that it dented. Shards of metal were broken and they cut his hand. The loud sound meant that everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at him, some with confusion, and others with concern but mainly out of sheer surprise.
He bit his bottom lip tightly as he watched the blood trickle down his hand that was still shaking. He tried to take a deep breath to calm himself down, but even the intake sounded shaky. He looked up at the others, who as soon as they met his gaze, instantly went back to what they were doing. No one dared talk to him when he was in this state, hell; he’d never ever been in this sort of state.
