A ROMANTIC EDUCATION - STEVE/TONY AU [CHAPTER 40]

Chapter 40

“Just shut up and run, losers!” He shouted as he took charge.
“What’s the deal with him?” he asked Wade, amused by his weird but at the same time happy attitude. He could use some cheering up while waiting for new from Steve.
“Ohhhh Tony Masters right? He’s the best guy here I mean asides from me~ But he’s not as good looking, obviously. I mean, the guy gets approached by teachers all the time to teach them, if you catch my drift. Basically, he’s a teacher-student-thing and he gets reallll pissed off when we don’t do what he wants. Heck, he taught Stevie everything about basketball, he teaches everything. The guys a genius and learns anything he sees in a snap, but he still doesn’t get me, which doesn’t make him much of a genius now, does it?” He said as he started making himself laugh.

“Right… A genius in what? Throwing a ball around and yelling at people? Stevie huh? What’s your opinion about him?”, Tony asked, wanting to know more from this weird guy running beside him.
“Hell no, Masters is a pro fighter at like everything and any sport, just throw it at him and he’ll pick it up. Just like that.” He said as he snapped his fingers, “As for Stevieo, he’s… He’s okay I guess. Happy guy, sexy girlfriend, everyone loves him, but me? I got my eye on him. I don’t get along with super perfect guys, asides myself of course; me and myself have great conversations in the mirror!”
“Wade. You were just talking to Rogers last time you saw him, at lunch.” Masters added,
“So were you! Skellitor.”
“Well you’re closer to that douchebag than I am, well, he’s a good team mate but the only reason I coached him is because he threw a wad of cash at me.”
“He’s not that well off!” Bruce added from behind them,
“He worked a heck load for that cash, but still, he paid me fair and square so I taught him everything. Now he’s a good sport, and what, not even a thank you? Without me he wouldn’t have that girlfriend of his!” Masters spoke confidently as he ran alongside Tony and Wade.
Tony didn’t really participate in the conversation, he was just picking up different things that each of them were contributing. “He seems like a good guy that works hard”, he said himself, not sure why he was defending Steve to these guys.
“He works hard, I’ll give him that. When I first had to deal with him he was a skinny little kid who just wanted to play baseball. I do good work.” Masters said confidently,
“You’re buds with him? Starky, I thought you guys kept fightin’”
A boy ran up behind them, using a staff in his hand to pole-volt ahead, “I thought that you both hated one another.” He said in a strange, almost French accent, but not quite, it had a touch of Southern in it, as though he were a cross between American and French.
“No one asked you to use a staff, Remmy!” Masters yelled,
“Yeah that’s cheating!”
“We’re not friends, we’re just science partners, so we have to get along one way or another I guess”, he said, still trying to comprehend who everyone was and why they suddenly started talking to him.
“Guess you’re in a predicament, but I would’ve never figured you’d stand up for the guy.” Masters said, arching an eyebrow.
“I don’t stand up for him, don’t get me wrong, guys like Rogers do annoy me and I have no interest whatsoever in what he’s up to”, Tony lied, ignoring him.
“Then you should just ignore him, like I do. There’s lots of us in the class that hate him, Stark.” Victor said from behind them, “Don’t feel bad for joining us. Perfect guys like him… Know nothing of what is to come. You’re smarter than that.”
“Von doom, quit bitchin’” Wade said, trying to lighten the mood again.
“Guys, quit talking about Steve while he’s not here, you should say all these things when he’s back, in his face”, a shorter boy added with a hesitant but calm voice. He had wavy brown hair and big blue eyes.
“Name’s Xavier, Charles Xavier”, he said to Tony, offering his hand to shake it. “Don’t listen to these guys, most of them are… ..really stupid”, he added in a lower register.
“Yeah, I kind of figured that out myself. It seems I don’t get along with jocks anway.”, Tony replied, looking back at the others who were fighting and running at the same time.
“We’re not boneheads! Except for Masters over there!” Wade shouted
“I’ll kill you in the locker rooms, Wilson.”
“Come at me bro!” He laughed, Remmy, meanwhile ran alongside Charles and Tony,
“Oh that is right, I didn’t introduce myself, my name is Remmy Lebeau.” He said, holding out his hand for Tony to shake.
“Pleased to meet you, Tony Stark”, Tony said, shaking his hand. “Anyone else to meet today? This is getting intense; it’s just like every party I attend. Meet many people that I won’t talk to ever again”
“You’ve met most other people, but most of them, well, your reputation, monsieur Stark, is quite… let us say, intimidating. Many are afraid to approach you.” Remmy said, twirling the staff in his hand as he spoke.
Tony raised an eyebrow. “I’ll say it again, don’t believe everything you read in magazines. Well, many things are true, but I’m not that bad as they describe me. Being intimidating is a gift, Remmy, and I do enjoy it”
“But it means that many are afraid to approach you, and hence, why it is what.. Your third day and yet it is your first time meeting us? Is that not correct, Charles?”
“I think Tony is approachable, but getting him to meet people during P.E isn’t what he was expecting, is it, Tony?”
“Yeah, not a fan. I could stand around and have people greet me, I’m used to that”, Tony laughed.
“But again, you need to know people, it’s always helpful to have people to cover your back”, Charles added, looking at the other guys that were still talking loudly.
“I guess so, I can get people to help me if I want to. That’s how my reputation comes in handy”
“You should not rely on your reputation, it can often bring about bad things, I am sure many of these people have judged you before they have met you because of it.” The boy said, flicking back his brown hair whilst continuing to twirl the staff between his fingers.
“I got used to it, that’s not something unusual for me. I just learnt to ignore all the bad comments and have my fun”, Tony replied, amazed by the staff skills.
“Erik!”, Charles shouted happily, dragging along a taller buy, with slick back hair and somehow cold eyes. “That’s Tony Stark, he’s new here”, he said, pointing at Tony.
“Erik Lensherr, I’ve heard about you, Stark”, Erik replied and nodded.
“Only good things I hope”, Tony smiled.
“Well, not exactly”, Erik said, running again in front of them.
“Don’t take him too seriously, he’s in a bad mood today”, Charles apologised.
“When is he not in a bad mood?!”  Wade shouted from the front,
Erik glared at Wade but ignored him, continuing his work out session
“Shut it Wade”, Charles replied at Wade with a strict look on his face.
“Hey, Charlie, I mean, yeah! You shut it!” He said as he screwed up his face, running forward and doing a couple of back flips playfully.
“Okay guys lets hustle, I think that’s enough track for today!” Masters shouted as he led the boys to the changing room.
“About time”, Tony muttered, mostly to himself, as he checked his phone again. Where could Steve be? He wouldn’t miss P.E. but he didn’t show up at all today. They had their science class together after this, and the teacher would surely question him.
As they walked into the changing rooms, Wade whacked Tony on the back, “We still up for that lunch buddy?”
Tony kept his calm as he felt Wade’s smack on his back. “Add this on the list of things that I don’t want you to do ever again? Do you understand? And yeah, I guess it’s fine”
“Sure thing Starky, I’ll hold you to that!” He said as he went to get dressed, on the way to get dressed many of the boys who had finally had a chance to talk to Tony, complimented him on the way in, things like “Great session today,” and “Nice meeting you.” They’d felt during the session that Tony was actually a nice guy, someone who they could talk to, someone who wasn’t just another douchebag that thought that he was a star.
Tony started undressing, hearing people mention his name around and felt good. He really missed that feeling, to hear things like that from people in his age, and smiled to himself. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea to transfer here anyway.
