A ROMANTIC EDUCATION - STEVE/TONY AU [CHAPTER 50]

Chapter 50

“Fair enough then”, Tony replied, turning his look away, looking outside the window instead. The rain mostly calmed down by now, and the sun was starting to come up again. “We’re still doing the project together right?”
“I guess we have to.” He said, licking his lips. The taste of the strong coffee tainted them.
“It’s going to be better now that we’ve… talked it out”, he said, pushing his half empty mug to the side. “As long as we both just sit down and concentrate, and not talk about much else.” Steve added, resting his arms on the top of the booth.
“Yes, of course… That too”, Tony agreed. “You know, I met a lot of guys today during P.E.”, he said, changing the subject.
“Oh?” He asked, raising an eyebrow. It surprised him that Tony actually decided to socialise with the others; he’d never seen them interact before.
“Yeah, they actually came up to me; Clint said that they feel intimidated by me or something. That guy, Wade is really weird. But I guess he’s fun to hang around with”, Tony said, still looking outside the window.
Steve laughed, “You actually talked with Wade Wilson? Who else?” He asked with intrigue.
“Let’s see…” Tony muttered, trying to remember everyone’s names. “I met Clint, Bruce, a French guy, Charles, probably his boyfriend, some guy with a fancy name, Doom or something… Yeah quite a few people I must say”, he replied, closing his eyes.
“…You talked to Victor von Doom? He doesn’t talk to anyone but well… His ‘crew’.” Steve said with a surprised look on his face.
“I guess they don’t see a celebrity in their P.E. class every day”, Tony said shaking his shoulders. “I don’t bond well with people Rogers, I never know if they want to talk to me
because I’m Tony Stark or because they actually like me”
“Well you’ll never know, to be honest.” He said, “Either way, I don’t care about your name or your status, you’re just a regular guy with an attitude problem to me.”
“Why thank you, I’ll look forward to your report on me when we finish”, Tony laughed. It wasn’t the first time he heard this about himself, so he just ignored Steve’s words.
“I’ll gladly write one.” He said, holding up his cup of coffee as he drank from it.
“Sure, go ahead, I’ll be honoured to read it”, Tony said, waving back a girl who blushed and quickly turned away.Steve rolled his eyes and placed the cup down, folding his arms and looking out of the window to see whether the weather had cleared up yet.
Pleased with himself that he managed to shun Steve, Tony started looking around, tapping his fingers on the table.
“So how long do you plan on being my tail?” He asked as he continued to stare out of the window.
“Not for long”, Tony replied, turning to face him again.
“Well I’m headed home soon.” He said, hoping that’d give him some time to think.
“I’ll probably do too” he replied unimpressed, looking at his watch. “Not much time left for school anyway”, he said, taking out his phone to text Pepper.
“Yep, I guess so…” He said awkwardly, getting up and grabbing his jacket from the heater. It was partially dry by now so he slipped it on, stuffing his shirt in his bag.
Taking his wallet out, Tony left some money on the table, waving at the waitress who was serving some people nearby. “The food was amazing, keep the change”, he said smiling again and standing up, waiting for Steve.
“Dammit Stark, I said I’ve got this.” He said, rolling his eyes again as he waved to the staff, the woman nearly jumped as Tony spoke to her; she was obviously swooning over him.
“Yeah, of course you do”, he replied, walking ahead of him, smiling back at people.
“…I said I’d pay.” Steve said as he side eyed the boy ahead of him.
“And nobody said that I’m obliged to listen to you”, Tony said, taking his sunglasses out of his pocket and putting them before he opened the door.
“Fine, I’ll just count that as you paying for yourself and I’ll put the rest on my tab when I get in this weekend.” He said, folding his arms.
“Whatever”, Tony said, waving his arm to him. “Are you coming?” He was holding the door for him and Steve was standing there, still talking about the bill.
“Yes.” Steve said with a huff, walking out of the door that was held open.
“Smart move”, Tony muttered as he closed the door behind him. The rain already stopped by now and he was
mostly dry. He checked his phone again, Pepper had replied telling him to wait for him by the school gate. “I’m heading back to school now”, he said, reading the text.
“Have fun.” He said, saluting at Tony as he was just about to walk in the opposite direction.
Tony stood there for a moment and then turned around, walking slowly, resisting the urge to look back at Steve again.
